For apprentices aged 16-18, achieving Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English is mandatory, unless already obtained the equivalent GCSE at grade 4/C or above.

For apprentices aged 19 and over, undertaking Functional Skills is optional but must be agreed with the employer.

Once completed, Data Engineer apprentices will have the following knowledge and skills, and will be able to exhibit the following behaviours.

Knowledge:

Data modelling: understand data structures, data relationships, and how to model data for efficient storage and retrieval.

Data Frameworks: learn about the frameworks for data quality, covering dimensions such as, accuracy, completeness, consistency, timeliness and accessibility.

Cloud Platforms: Gain knowledge of on-demand cloud platforms, such as: Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, Hadoop, IBM Cloud, Salesforce and Microsoft Azure.

Skills:

Technical skills – become proficient in using data analysis techniques and data visualisation tools (charts, tables and graphs) to help make recommendations or to solve issues.

Data quality, monitoring and troubleshooting: understand how to track data quality metrics for accuracy and develop monitoring tools and forecasts. Learn how to investigate incidents, determine root cause and resolve issues.

Collaboration and communication: learn the importance of building relationships with users, analysts and data teams. Understand how to present and communicate data product information to audiences.

Behaviours:

Logical and Analytical Thinking: learn how to approach tasks and problems in a logical way. Understand how to use structured thinking to investigate and solve data-related issues.
