The AI Leadership ­– AI adoption, procurement and governance – apprenticeship unit is for those tasked with shaping, influencing, and governing AI systems, within their organisation.

This practical unit, consists of 30 hours of guided learning, is designed to support individuals by developing skills and knowledge in approach to AI and digital technologies. But with a specific focus on evaluating options, developing business cases, and establishing governance and assurance approaches.

Participants will develop skills to make sound and ethical AI procurement decisions, through effective testing, applying benchmarking criteria, and risk assessments. While also equipping them with the skill to design and implement an effective AI governance framework.

Structure and Delivery

Apprenticeships

Our apprenticeship units are delivered through a blend of virtual and face to face sessions, let by subject specialists. We offer bespoke, flexible delivery modes and times, to suit each employer; and these can be continually varied throughout the 30 hours of guided learning.

During the time on the AI Leadership – AI adoption, procurement and governance – apprenticeship unit, apprentices will cover a range of core topics. These include:

Evaluation of AI solutions and vendors using structured criteria: organisational process (cost, performance, risk, data readiness)

Making procurement decisions: based on testing, benchmarking and user validation.

Assessing risks associated with AI acquisition: including vendor lock-in, data IP and sustainability.

Designing and implementing AI governance frameworks: including roles, responsibilities and escalation pathways.

Embedding ethical, legal and regulatory considerations into AI decision-making.

Defining assurance and compliance processes: including documentation, auditability and transparency.

Designing and implementing human oversight mechanisms for AI systems.

Apprentices must be aged 19 years or over and in a leadership position within an organisation. They must have autonomy to deliver technological change and inform investment decisions.

Once the AI leadership – AI adoption, procurement and governance – apprenticeship unit is completed, leaders will be able to exhibit the following technical knowledge and skills.

Technical knowledge:

  • AI and automation concepts and models that support leadership decision-making, and their limitations.
  • The role of organisational leadership in responsible AI adoption, including setting values, policy and strategy.
  • Understand how to develop and implement organisational AI strategy and plans.
  • Legislation, regulation, governance and assurance frameworks that support the safe adoption of AI.
  • Governance principles to ensure accountability and compliance, including system vulnerabilities, mitigating threats or risk to assets, data and cyber security.

Technical skills:

  • Identify organisational improvements and opportunities for innovation and growth, using qualitative and quantitative analysis of information and data.
  • Use evidence to inform governance of AI adoption, outcomes and facilitate improvement.
  • Keeping up to date with existing, evolving and emerging technologies and sector trends in AI, automation and technology
  • Defining expectations for testing and feedback to ensure reliability, security, accessibility of AI systems, and alignment with organisational needs.
  • Undertake assurance activities to evidence responsible AI and automation, including maintaining clear documentation of design and decision-making and applying assurance frameworks to support compliance with organisational, regulatory and ethical standards.

The AI leadership – AI adoption, procurement and governance – apprenticeship unit is essentially designed to strengthen and focus key AI skills for existing senior leaders. It can also offer career progression to positions, such as: Digital Transformation Manager, AI adoption lead, and programme or project leads for AI-enabled change.
