The AI leadership – AI strategy and opportunity – apprenticeship unit is designed for those in leadership roles with responsibility for setting AI strategy, and building AI literacy and governance within their organisation.

This bespoke training programme, which consists of 30 hours of guided learning, is geared to individuals at an exploratory stage of AI adoption and who wish to build confidence in AI leadership.

This unit equips leaders to shape AI policy and strategy, which is aligned to organisational goals. It also builds knowledge of evaluating opportunities for AI-driven improvement, including risks; as well as building stakeholder support.

Structure and Delivery

Apprenticeships

Our apprenticeship units are delivered through a blend of virtual and face to face sessions, let by subject specialists. We offer bespoke, flexible delivery modes and times, to suit each employer; and these can be continually varied throughout the 30 hours of guided learning.

During the time on the AI Leadership – AI strategy and opportunity – apprenticeship unit, participants will cover a range of core topics. These include:

Organisational leadership in setting AI policy and strategy: building business cases, workforce implications, organisational perception and sustainability to inform decision making.

Evaluating opportunities for AI-driven improvement: using qualitative and quantitative evidence, including assessment of risk.

Defining, documenting and communicating an AI strategy: aligning to organisational goals, values and risk appetite.

Assessing viability and risk through AI use cases and pilots: identifying investment areas, balancing productivity gains against feasibility, impact and organisational readiness.

Engaging stakeholders to build support for AI strategy and adoption: including non-technical audiences.

Critical evaluation and monitoring: implementing adaptions, including responses to AI technologies and trends.

Apprentices must be aged 19 years or over and in a leadership position within an organisation. They must have autonomy to deliver technological change and inform investment decisions.

Once the AI leadership – AI strategy and opportunity – apprenticeship unit is completed, leaders will be able to exhibit the following technical knowledge and skills.

Technical knowledge:

  • AI and automation concepts and models that support leadership decision-making, and their limitations.
  • Capabilities, benefits and risks of automation, AI and digital tools, including responsible use.
  • The role of organisational leadership in responsible AI adoption, including setting values, policy and strategy.
  • Understanding how to develop and implement organisational AI strategy and plans, including approach to workforce, managing risk, monitoring and evaluation.
  • How to assess viability of solutions when making acquisition decisions.
  • Principles and the application of testing methodologies, and application in practice.
  • Principles of human oversight and human AI collaboration to achieve shared outcomes.

Technical Skills:

  • Identify organisational improvements and opportunities for innovation and growth.
  • Set strategic direction for AI and gain support from key stakeholders.
  • Commission analysis to identify if AI adoption is viable.
  • Review, establish, follow and amend policies and procedures on data and information security.
  • Stay up to date with existing, evolving and emerging technologies and sector trends in AI.
  • Horizon scan to identify new developments that have implications for AI use.

The AI leadership – AI strategy and opportunity – apprenticeship unit is designed to upskill senior leaders in AI governance, opportunity assessment and strategic implementation. The apprenticeship unit is a route for current leaders and managers to progress into roles that focus on specialised AI strategy and digital transformation. Or, senior executive roles with direct AI responsibility.
