Kate Townrow is currently completing her Marketing Manager Apprenticeship with Barnsley Council through Oxford Professional Education. We chatted with Kate to hear about how she’s finding her apprenticeship and what she’s learnt…

What was your background before starting your apprenticeship?

Before starting my apprenticeship, I worked at the council for eight years as a Communications and Marketing Officer.

Why did you decide to sign up to the Marketing Manager Apprenticeship?

I wanted to develop my skills, gain more confidence, and have the opportunity for progression. I also wanted to give myself a new challenge and increase my knowledge so I can be the best I can be in my role.

How did the apprenticeship support your daily work?

My apprenticeship feeds into everything, I am finding myself questioning things more and applying what I’ve learnt. My level of understanding of marketing has improved and I am able to see this in my role and see how the standard of my work is improving.

How are you finding your apprenticeship?

It is challenging at times but I’m really enjoying it. I really like the range of learning in the academic workshops and being able to apply what I have learnt to my daily job. I can see the improvement in my knowledge and understanding, and I’ve started approaching my work differently.

Tell us about the company and what your job role involves?

I work in the communication and marketing team. We support the services across the council to communicate with residents about our services, keep them informed and help them access these services. We also help to protect the council’s reputation, promote the borough, and work hard to communicate and engage with staff across the organisation.

How does Oxford Professional Education support you in your apprenticeship?

Everyone is very supportive. There are regular progress meetings which are helpful and there is always someone on hand to help. The resources and supporting materials are excellent.

Would you recommend this apprenticeship to others?

Yes definitely, an apprenticeship opens up a lot of opportunities and is great for personal development and self confidence.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting an apprenticeship?

Go for it! Don’t let circumstances hold you back. I work part time and have a young family but I am still able to complete the apprenticeship and have a good work life balance.
