In this case study, Liam shares his procurement apprenticeship experience at Rolls-Royce, from choosing an apprenticeship over university to working across a global engineering business. His journey highlights how apprenticeships can support both professional growth and real-world decision-making.

Why did you decide to sign up for the apprenticeship?

The cost of living made university offers less attractive, and speaking to graduates at my part-time job made me realise how competitive the graduate job market is. I felt it would be better to gain experience in an industry that interests me.

How are you finding the apprenticeship so far?

So far, I have loved my Procurement and Supply Chain Practitioner Apprenticeship. It has given me the opportunity to see vastly different parts of a very complex business.

The projects I work on allow me to apply academic knowledge to real-life scenarios, which is an incredibly rewarding way to learn. The support I have received has been top tier, there is no question too small or too complex, and industry experts are always on hand to support my development.

How does the apprenticeship support your daily work?

The apprenticeship gives me the academic backing to shape the decisions I make throughout the working day. Having an understanding of key models and concepts gives my decisions credibility, leading to better outcomes.

It also focuses on behavioural development. Skills such as time management and building relationships with stakeholders are vital in the workplace, and developing these has helped me become a more well-rounded and mature person both inside and outside of work.

Rolls-Royce is one of the world’s largest engineering businesses, with products ranging from civil aviation engines to Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMR).

Throughout my apprenticeship, I have completed five different placements across various roles and product areas. This variety has kept the experience engaging and allowed me to develop a wide range of skills.

My current role is an in-contract buyer within the European Major Suppliers team. We work with the 18 highest-spend suppliers to strengthen relationships and deliver cost reduction activities.

I’ve also had strong support from the pastoral team, with regular check-ins covering wellbeing, stress and progress. I can confidently say Oxford Professional Education is a top-tier provider.

Would you recommend this apprenticeship to others?

I would absolutely recommend this apprenticeship. It has been a great opportunity that has supported significant personal and professional growth.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting an apprenticeship?

Look at the full range of options available. Through my experience, I’ve seen how wide the apprenticeship landscape is, there’s likely something suited to everyone.

There’s a common perception that apprenticeships are only for traditional trades, but that’s not the case. There are programmes across many sectors, including marketing, childcare and more.

An apprenticeship is a great way to earn a qualification while developing both your career and personal skills.
