Choosing the right path after school isn’t always straightforward, especially when traditional university routes don’t feel like the right fit. For Emily Fenwick, a Level 3 Marketing Assistant Apprenticeship provided the perfect blend of work experience and structured learning.
Now two years into her apprenticeship with Yamazaki Mazak, a global leader in advanced manufacturing, Emily is thriving in a marketing role that spans event planning, social media strategy and internal communications. In this blogpost, Emily shares how the apprenticeship has helped her grow professionally and why it could be a smart move for others considering a career in marketing.
What was your background before starting your apprenticeship?
Before my apprenticeship I completed my A-Levels in Business and Photography, I also completed a BTEC in Travel & Tourism.
Why did you decide to sign up for the apprenticeship?
After visiting several universities, I realised that the traditional academic route wasn’t the right fit for me. I learn best through hands-on experience, so I decided to apply for this apprenticeship. It offers the perfect opportunity to develop my skills in a practical setting, apply my knowledge to real-world situations, and learn directly from experienced mentors.
How are you finding the apprenticeship so far?
It’s been a valuable experience so far. I’ve learned a lot in the last two years, and I appreciate being able to apply what I’m learning directly to real projects.
How does the apprenticeship support your daily work?
The apprenticeship links directly to what I do each day. The learning modules and workshops provide the background knowledge, and then I get to put that into practice right away in my role, which makes the learning stick.

How does Oxford Professional Education support you in your apprenticeship?
Oxford Professional Education provides excellent support by giving me structured learning alongside my workplace training. The workshops, resources, and regular check-ins help me understand the theory behind my role, and my tutor is always available to guide me whenever I need help or feedback.
Would you recommend this apprenticeship to others?
I’d definitely recommend this apprenticeship. It’s a great way to gain hands-on experience while learning from experts in the industry. The mix of practical work and structured training has really helped me build skills and confidence.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a balance of training and work, so the more effort you put in, the more you’ll get out of it. It’s a fantastic way to gain industry experience while working towards your qualifications.
