Whilst working for Watford Community Housing, Lucy Zeitlin completed her Level 4 Marketing Executive Apprenticeship with through us, Oxford Professional Education Apprenticeships. We chatted with Lucy to see how she got on while studying for her apprenticeship…
What was your background before starting your apprenticeship?
I had completed my undergraduate degree in English and Psychology in 2018 and went on to work in a concert venue while I decided what career path to take. Then Covid-19 hit and I was furloughed and suddenly had a lot more time to think. I wanted to go down the English route and so looked for editorial work and eventually found this communications apprenticeship that was offering a two-year course in marketing which sounded ideal.
Why did you decide to sign up to the apprenticeship?
I thought the idea of earning whilst I’m learning sounded really appealing. I love learning new things and I knew an apprenticeship would give me a great depth of knowledge about communications and marketing that I would be able to use throughout my career.
How did you find the apprenticeship?
It was challenging studying for the apprenticeship alongside working, but it was also a very rewarding experience. Once I found the right balance, I found it complimented my day-to-day work rather than increasing the workload.
How does the apprenticeship support your daily work?
I learnt so much from the apprenticeship that I use to support my day-to-day role. For example, learning about customer personas has led to our content being tailored to suit our different audiences and my copywriting skills have definitely improved.
Tell us about the company and what your job role involves?
I work for Watford Community Housing, a housing association which owns and manages around 5,700 homes across South-West Hertfordshire, with a focus on providing much-needed homes for lower-income households. As Communications Apprentice, my main responsibilities are leading our social media, creating and posting content and blog posts for our internal and external websites, and doing admin tasks to support the organisation.
How did Oxford Professional Education support you in your apprenticeship?
I received a huge amount of support along the way – from my tutor teaching the workshops, Louise marking my workbooks and Cara answering all my many questions. I believe they all contributed to me successfully completing my apprenticeship.
Would you recommend this apprenticeship to others?
I would recommend this apprenticeship to others; it was the prefect course for not just learning the content but also learning how to apply it to my current and future roles.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting an apprenticeship?
Go for it! Whatever your age or educational background, an apprenticeship is a great way of learning something new.
