Starting your career with an apprenticeship can be a game-changer, just ask Amaan Osman. His apprenticeship experience at Rolls-Royce, opened the door to hands-on learning and personal growth. Amman was enrolled on the Commercial Procurement and Supply Apprenticeship (now known as the Procurement and Supply Chain Practitioner Apprenticeship) and they’ve gained practical skills in sourcing, negotiation, supplier management, all while being part of one of the world’s most renowned engineering companies.

What was your background before starting your apprenticeship?

I completed a Level 3 BTEC Business Studies Diploma at college, which was a two-year course. Alongside this, I worked part-time in retail.

Why did you decide to sign up to the apprenticeship?

I’ve always liked the idea of being able to apply theory to practice and an apprenticeship has allowed me to do exactly that. A few family members recommended this route instead of going to university. Gaining real-world experience in a field I wanted to pursue has been a huge advantage. Being at a company like Rolls-Royce also presented strong opportunities for growth.

How did you find the apprenticeship?

Like anything, it’s had its challenges, but I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. Mistakes have helped me grow and the programme has helped me identify my strengths, weaknesses and areas where I need to spend more time. I’ve also developed my soft skills along the way. Overall, I’ve loved being an apprentice!

How did the apprenticeship support your daily work?

My apprenticeship experience at Rolls-Royce has allowed me to apply what I learn directly to my day-to-day responsibilities. It’s helped me understand how and why certain things are done and it’s given me a chance to reflect on what I’ve learned in real time.

Tell us about the company and what your job role involves?

Rolls-Royce is a globally recognised engineering company with expertise in nuclear, power systems, electrical, civil and defence aircraft engineering. My role within the company involves sourcing parts that go into the engine. This includes negotiation, cost analysis, contract development and management, supplier management, stakeholder management and project management.

How did Oxford Professional Education support you in your apprenticeship?

Oxford Professional Education has provided a lot of support. They’ve given us time, resources and fantastic tutors. From preparing for exams and completing documentation to checking in regularly and offering general moral support, they’ve made the experience smooth. A special thanks to my tutor, Katie, who’s been incredibly supportive and there for me every step of the way.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting an apprenticeship

Be prepared to manage your time well. Balancing a job and qualification can be demanding, but it’s absolutely worth it. This has been one of the best experiences I’ve had, and I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone considering it.
